I maintain my own weekly top 10 chart of the songs that
I'm listening to at a given time. It just shows which
songs are currently fresh for me, and the ones that I'm
most likely to be playing. It should be noted that the
chart does not indicate my favourite songs. If that
were the case, it wouldn't change very often.

So, how does it work? Well, there's a little system
I have which I work through every Saturday to process
the latest chart. Throughout the week, if I hear a
particularly good song that I feel deserves a place in
my top 10, it goes immediately into what I call the
"Horizon". This is where songs stay until they can
be admitted into the chart. When I compile the chart,
I take the songs from the Horizon (which is usually only
one or two), and assign them a number to indicate at
what position I think they should debut.

Then, I go through each of the existing songs on the
chart, and assign them a positive or negative number
which depends on whether I'm into them more this
week, or whether they're starting to get old. This
number is virtually always between -3 and +3, zero
meaning that I feel the same about the
song this week.

Next, I simply give a new preliminary position to
each song based on its assigned adjustment
value. For example, if a song was at #5 and has
been assigned a value of -2, it is now given a
preliminary position of #7.

But, what happens if there's also a song at #6
which has been given a value of -1? It also has to
land at number #7 for now. Once all songs have
been adjusted according to their assigned values,
I deal with position conflicts through a random
number generator. So, one of those #7s will come
before the other simply by chance.

Now the weekly chart is complete and ready to
analyse in terms of movement from earlier weeks.

Note: In response to what happened in July of 1998
when I bought Ace of Base's album, "Cruel Summer"
(i.e. six of the songs debuted in the same week,
thereby virtually overthrowing the chart), I have
made a rule that a maximum of two songs by any
given group or artist may be admitted from the
Horizon on any given week.

Well, here's the top 10 for the week of 000122:

1. That's The Way It Is -- Céline Dion

2. Att Finnas Till -- ABBA

3. Dancing Queen -- Sixpence None the Richer

4. Then The Morning Comes -- Smash Mouth

5. Love For Sale -- Ace of Base

6. Just Like That -- Jakaranda

7. The Best Thing -- Savage Garden

8. Mamma Mia -- A*Teens

9. Smooth -- Rob Thomas w/ Santana

10. What's My Age Again -- Blink 182
