This awesome
Swedish foursome was the best-selling
group of the 1970's worldwide and certainly makes the
top of my list. Although their image and sound was
considered somewhat too polished, especially in North
America, their music has taken its place among the
greatest pop songs ever written.
The crystalline angelic vocal combination
of Agnetha
Fältskog and Anni-Frid (Frida) Lyngstad, along with
the songwriting ingenuity of Benny Andersson and
Björn Ulvaeus (who continue to prove their immense
talent through three musicals and various other
projects since the break-up of ABBA) were the
main ingredients in the huge success and paramount
quality of the ABBA phenomenon.
ABBA's music has been rediscovered
by a new
generation of listeners as well as songwriters who make
no attempt to hide the impact of ABBA on their own
work. The group's timeless recordings are increasingly
recognised as true masterpieces of the pop genre both
by those who fondly remember the days of ABBA's
conquest, and by those for whom the music is a
new-found treasure.
